Thoughts on finishing a Master’s degree

You are enough
I just want to remind you this morning, in case no one else is, that you are enough.
You do not have to prove to anyone that you have a right to exist.
I have this terrible habit of trying to justify to the world that I deserve my next breathe.
I deserve it because of my work. I show the world, I show God, my busy schedule as if to say see, look how needed and important I am.
So I work, and you work. We often work more than we should. Get stressed more than we should. Become distracted more than we should. All for the sake of being validated. Of feeling important. For the sake of justifying that I should be able to wake up tomorrow.
It my quest for significance, I forget the things that are significant, the things that bring me significance.
I am a week away from graduating with a Master’s degree. As I reflect on the three years it took to get to this point, I have come to realize that this pursuit was in part done to justify my position in the church. To justify my role as a leader. To justify my value as a human being.
But why did I need to add stress and workload to my life when leadership and value were granted to me by God and the people around me? Something in me had determined that God and peer were wrong, that I was not who they said I was and that I needed to prove my worth.
If nothing else, this three year and very expensive Master’s program taught me this: my value is not determined by a degree. This is something I had known before, and yet I have lived contrary to what I knew. I have been given the right to exist by God who gives me this breathe and the next one. I don’t have to justify my existence to anyone.
You and I, we are enough.
