Who profits from poverty?

In my undergraduate experience, I was given the opportunity to travel with some fellow students to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. We walked the mall, visited some think tanks, and got to experience what it would be like to be a resident there.

At the time of our visit, conversation around race was extremely heated. Some of the students on the trip actually had interest in going to D.C. with the intent of helping shift policy in a way that would help uplift those who they saw as pushed down in society.

These folks in D.C. had an interesting response: that if these students were serious about ending racism in America they should do it outside of D.C. They explained that those leading the conversation around race relations do not want racism to end because there was more money to be made in racism continuing than ending. That did not mean that meaningful work or policy could or did happen, but the system that baits anger between the races must ultimately continue so that the money produced by the ensuing anger might continue.

That conversation opened my eyes to a government that gives the appearance of solving problems while profiting from the very issues they were supposed to solve.

But instead of me just rambling this Monday morning, check out this video! It does a great job looking into the great profits to be made by keeping people poor.
