The rocks cry out
I love architecture, especially church buildings. I am inspired by the stones formed into massive structures reaching to the heavens, with spires and stained glass and gorgeous paintings. They point to the beauty of our Creator God and the great gifts God has planted in his image bearers. The stone buildings seem to cry out praise to their God, fashioned together by the praise of human hands.
And yet, if we remember the context of this verse, Jesus says that the rocks would cry out if the people are not praising.
As much as I love a beautiful building, I would much rather see a beautiful people. There are many beautiful church buildings empty of people. The lights have gone out, because the people who once inhabited the building were focused on the building and not the lives that would fill such a building. The building became the mission, and once built there was no mission left to fill it.
I once wanted to be an architect that I might construct buildings that people from all over the world would come and see and call beautiful. I am now only interested in architecting a beautiful life, one worthy of the gift Christ has given me. I am interested in helping others build something beautiful.
It has been and always will be the people, not the building, that matter.
