“Pastors love money” -Druski

There is a skit by comedian Druski that made waves around the internet where he takes aim at pastors, particularly the mega-church variety, and the stereotypical shenanigans that happen within a large church.

Obviously, it was a hyperbolic representation attempting to get a laugh. The reason so many people did not find it funny was because it was almost too spot on. Where Druski was attempting to make light, people found it to be much closer to the truth.

Are all large churches so extra? No. Some of them are genuinely trying to be faithful in stewarding the flock that has gathered in their spaces.

Are all pastors lovers of money? No. There are many pastors who are unable to be sole providers of their family because their paycheck alone could not raise a family. There are many bi-vocational ministers, and many who do not get paid at all from the church. Most pastors, I would argue, do it out of obedience birthed from their love for Jesus.

But there are some churches and some pastors who have done a great job of making church entertainment, and it is a type of entertainment that people are willing to put their money towards. What is painful is that many of these folks are giving money to the church because they feel they are doing it out of obedience to God, and some pastors prey on people’s religious devotion to fill their own pocketbook.

This is the exception, not the rule. I encourage you to get into a local church. One where everyone knows and loves everyone else. One where the ministry is localized, meeting the very specific needs of the time and place where that church body resides. Do not go to church for entertainment, but seek bodies that are doing the work of reconciliation, who have a real heart for Christlikeness, unity, and community.

We all like to be entertained. But a church gathering is not about being entertained. It is about growing in righteousness with a group of people who are committed to God and one another.
