This past week, President Trump announced that he has committed the country to an investment in Intel. This investment is great for Intel, but I fear bad for the country. This is for a couple reasons:
Intel is not a great company. Intel came to President Trump in hopes to make a deal because they had fallen so far behind in the chips race. NVIDIA was eating their lunch.
The government should not be in the business of picking winners if we are a free market. If we were a truly free market, then great companies should be allowed to thrive and poorly run companies allowed to crumble.
This is an activity that China participates in. President Trump has said that, though the United States will now have a large position within Intel, it will not hold a position on the board. But having such a large position is impossible to ignore and certainly will influence decision making. This is something that the government of China does and they exert their influence whenever they see fit.
This will inflate the price of stocks. When the government began subsidizing healthcare, healthcare costs ballooned. When the government began backing student loans, cost of education skyrocketed. When the government begins buying up companies, it is going to inflate the price of stocks. Or, if they buy a bad company, the government will end up being the bag holder on behalf of taxpayers.
I think that AI is awesome, and I think that being competitive in the AI race is important. To do so, we need healthy competition from onshore partners with reliable supply chains. But I do get antsy when the government goes beyond subsidies and begins to actually own shares of participants.

I think the phrase “time in the market beats timing the market” applies to faith as well.
If you want to have faith in a certain circumstance, it isn’t going to happen if you haven’t been soaking in God’s presence heading into that moment.
