Murder is always wrong
I cannot wait to live in a world that no longer excuses the taking of another person’s life.
I mourn the death of George Floyd. I mourn the death of Charlie Kirk. I mourn the death of Palestinians and Jews. I mourn those being killed by the cartel down at the border and I mourn the death of cartel members by the actions of our government. I mourn those killed by strangers and I mourn those on death row. I mourn the deaths of many unknown individuals senselessly murdered without any outcry from our heartless world.
I refuse to excuse the taking of life of anyone, whether deemed guilty or innocent.
God approached Cain and asked where his brother Abel was, and Cain asked, “am I my brother’s keeper?”
The answer is “yes”. You are to look after your brothers and sisters. Your neighbors. To look after and love your enemies.
And when we allow, encourage, or heaven forbid even celebrate the taking of life, the blood of those we were supposed to love and steward cries out from the ground and enters the ears of the Living and Just God.
It is not just the murderers who are implicated in this sin. It is not a sickness of the political right or left. The stain of death is worn by all of us who participate in a society that allows murder to continue.
I was disgusted by people online celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk. And I am equally disgusted that we continue to encourage wars overseas. That we encourage the murder of those at our border.
Philosophically, to murder to make a value claim: that my life is more valuable than yours. In no way can I in good faith argue that this is true. We are all made in the image of God. My sons and daughter are no more valuable than yours. I have no right to protect their right to life by taking yours or your children’s right to live.
Theologically, it is better for me to give up my life than to take someone else’s. I, for one, know that I will be with Jesus once I close my eyes. I cannot say with certainty the same for anyone else. Because of my eternal security based not on my own works but the grace of Christ, it is better I die than you. Therefore, I would never claim that I should live while another dies.
We have it wrong, and we are wrong because the sickness of sin and death and the Satan is not outside us but in us.
We need not a movement of vengeance but repentance.
We need Jesus.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
