Erika Kirk forgives
The death of Charlie Kirk has sent shockwaves around our country and around the world.
There have been vigils happening across the world, people honoring the impact Charlie made on their life and their community. Many of these vigils have been marked by worship because, whether you love him or hate him, Charlie’s stated desire was to die being known primarily for his faith in Jesus. He was a Christian.
My prayer has been for his wife, Erika Kirk, for comfort, but also for the supernatural power of forgiveness to empower her. Anyone can take vengeance for a wrong, and she has been wronged. But a Christian can show forgiveness in a moment like this. To forgive in a moment like this would show the world a shadow of the forgiveness that Christ first showed us.
And Erika did forgive Charlie’s shooter. And everyone is amazed.
The problem with the death penalty
I have had many people who have said that Charlie deserved to die. He had said some things that had caused damage to specific communities of people and, because words have real impact, he deserved judgement for his words.
Logically, then, the shooter also deserves a similar judgement. An eye for an eye. A cascading cycle of death.
Forgiveness stops the cycle. Erika has a massive amount of support behind her, and much of that support feels as though this young man should be put to death for the murder.
If we start putting to death all of those who deserve to die, then the killing will never stop. All of us have sinned, and the wages of those sins is death.
It is believed that only the most grievous of sins are worthy of the death penalty, but in the eyes of eternity even the smallest blemish brings about destruction. It is only forgiveness that brings forth life.
Those who feel it was acceptable for Charlie to die are short sighted. If justice were to come for all, we all would be swept up and consumed by the fire. But thanks be to God who has poured out forgiveness through his Son Jesus Christ.
Submission to the will of God
One of the most powerful moments of Erika Kirk’s speech yesterday was her submission to the will of God. She claimed it was God’s will that Charlie die.
If not a single sparrow fall to the ground without God’s care (Matthew 10:29), so, too, does God not show care when us humans fall?
To the modern individual, this is horrifying.
After all, look at who excuses his shooting to begin with. Many of those who excuse his death are those who are supportive of the trans movement. This is the type of person who is unwilling to submit their sexuality over to God. If they will not submit to the will of God in the bedroom, certainly they are not submissive in matters of life and death.
Yet Erika shows us again a glimpse into Christlikeness, not wishing death on her adversaries, but love and forgiveness and life. That the Lord’s will be done.
Are you willing to turn over justice and the power over life and death to God? Do you trust God enough to take care of those things?
BREAKING: In a New York Times interview this morning, Erika Kirk stated she wants the government to determine whether Tyler Robinson, the alleged ass*ssin of Charlie, should face the d*ath penalty. “I do not want that man's bl00d on my ledger.”
“I’m a strong believer that this
